Maintaining a historic home is an expensive business ('If I didn't have this house to look after, then I'd be well off')Maintaining a historic home is an expensive business.Tissington Hall, a 400 year old house in Derbyshire with a mere 12 bedrooms, had a £16 000 bill for heating alone last year. The current owner sat down a cried when he inherited it and it's £100 000 annual running costs. Weddings and functions obviously help, but why not follow Doddington Hall and open a restaurant and farm shop? Because it's just not going to cover the £150 000 per room you're going to need to find for tapestry repairs.James Hervey-Bathurst, outging head of the Historic Houses Association and owner of Eastnor Castle has had to cough up £320 000 for his roof so far this year. Hopefully receipts from Land Rover and the Big Chill should go some way to covering it. Perhaps a few more TV appearances would help?Should the National Trust step in? They've can now only look after truely execptional properties, like the John Vanbrugh designed Seaton Delaval Hall Maintaining a historic home is an expensive business ('If I didn't have this house to look after, then I'd be well off')Maintaining a historic home is an expensive business.Tissington Hall, a 400 year old house in Derbyshire with a mere 12 bedrooms, had a £16 000 bill for heating alone last year. Melting Greenland glacier water (US Eastern Seaboard the spillway for a "slow wave" of melting Greenland glaciar water)Melting Greenland glacier water forms a "slow wave" that stays in the Atlantic for at least 50 years before reaching the Pacific, according to a new study. The water piles up in the Atlantic. "It is often assumed that sea levels will rise instantaneously, but that is unlikely, given what we know about ocean dynamics." Fifty years after the meltwater is released from Greenland, sea-level rise could be 30 times greater around Greenland and down the eastern side of North America, including the Gulf of Mexico, than in the Pacific Ocean. Sea-level rises in Europe are around six times that of the Pacific, but only a fifth as great as on the opposite shore of the Atlantic. Tod Browning (Freaks)Tod Browning's 1932 cinematic masterpiece Freaks tells the story of a close-knit group of circus sideshow workers who are wronged and take revenge. The film's use of real-life freaks so disturbed audiences that some ran screaming from theaters, distributors refused to handle the film, and it was banned in Britain for over 30 years. Audience feedback at preview screenings and changes demanded by censors meant that 30 minutes of "repulsive elements" in the original cut were removed or replaced. A lengthy text prologue was hastily added and at least three different endings were tried, none completely satisfactory. Even with these changes, all designed to minimize the grotesque and disturbing impact of the film, audiences of the day did not accept it. MGM finally withdrew it at a loss of some $164,000.Today, critics are more likely to praise the audacious aesthetic and philosophical lengths to which Browning goes to challenge the way we define beauty and abnormality or even parse it as a distorted symbol of the Hollywood studio system Browning worked under.Freaks was (loosely) based on the short story Spurs by Tod Robbins.Full movie: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (These Youtube links have noticeably better picture and sound quality than the Google Video version linked above; the Google Video version has the text prologue missing in Youtube version.)Notable excerpts: Prince Randian lights a cigarette with his lips - dancing in the forest - Schlitzie - wedding banquet - chase scene/trailerMiscellaneous: Analysis - documents and photos - review1 - review2 - Johnny Eck - Schlitzie - IMDB - posters - Zippy connection - previously Tod Browning CINE TERRORTod Browning CINE TERROR ( 1 ) Tod Browning (Freaks)Tod Browning's 1932 cinematic masterpiece Freaks tells the story of a close-knit group of circus sideshow workers who are wronged and take revenge. CarTalk (Marge Innovera's Favorite TV Show)The CarTalk guys are invading the television airwaves starting tomorrow night with their new cartoon show "Click & Clack's As the Wrench Turns," airing on PBS. The radio show is god-like; it will be interesting to see how they translate into a fictional cartoon setting. After checking out the preview videos, I'm a little skeptical...but I'll still be watching. Heck, it'd be funny if they just read the complete list of credits from the radio show. Connie Heermann (Words like mother-blank!)Renegade high school English teacher Connie Heermann was suspended without pay for 18 months for using the book The Freedom Writers Diary in her class. The book, which inspired a movie starring Hilary Swank, is still available in the school library, and 149 of 150 students returned signed permission slips authorizing the use of the book in class. The administration at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis, IN decided that the content was inappropriate on the day she handed out the books and demanded that she recall them. She was ultimately disciplined for insubordination. The school district is no stranger to controversy: in 2006, there were efforts to prevent the student production of Ragtime.
